Saudi Arabia ranks 7th for number of Playstation players

Saudi Arabia is punching above its weight when it comes to the number of PlayStation players, according to a new report, which ranks the country at 7th place globally.

The country, which has 4.5% of the global share of PS gamers according to the GameDiscoverCo data, sits just behind Japan, which represents 4.6% of the share.

Though Saudi has a population of 36 million people, it sits ahead of countries with much larger populations such as Brazil and Turkey in the newly released rankings.

The United Arab Emirates also features in the data, ranking 20th out of the 20 countries listed, with 1.2% of the share.

The United States dominates the figures, ranking first with 37.2% of players, followed by the UK in second with 7.6% and Spain in third with 7.2%.

The report cites the success of regional localisation for AAA titles being a factor, with the likes of Resident Evil 4 and Hogwarts Legacy doing particularly well thanks to having Arabic-language versions of the games.

It is also likely that Saudi Arabia's significant investment into its gaming infrastructure will further increase the penetration of PlayStation users. The government has set aside more than $38 billion for the sector, with plans including the Gamers8 festival in Riyadh, which features the biggest esports prize pool in history.

The report also provided data for the top 20 countries for both Xbox and Steam users, though no MENA countries were represented in either list.
